One of the most terrifying true stories.
  • 150
  • Director: Joshua Oppenheimer
    Producer: Werner Herzog
    Running time: 2 hours

A documentary which challenges former Indonesian death-squad leaders to reenact their mass-killings in whichever cinematic genres they wish, including classic Hollywood crime scenarios and lavish musical numbers.

Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Act of Killing is a beautifully disturbing master piece which throws out the rule book of documentary filmmaking. The surreal and embellished re-enactments that are created by the Indonesian Paramilitary are scenes which shockingly reflect their ignorance towards the heinous crimes they committed. However, Oppenheimer’s filmmaking technique reveals an inner truth that is beyond the comprehension of the films participants.

Nominated for the 2014 Best Documentary Oscar and won the 2014 BAFTA for Best Documentary.
